Everyday Toddler Styles

I am doing several posts about toddler hairstyles. If you missed my first how-to guide on styling your toddlers hair with some quick and easy styles that help get the hair out of your daughters face, check out Easy Styles for Toddlers.

With the Super Bowl on Sunday, my Aunt and her family came over to watch the game. She has an adorable little two year old girl who loves to have her hair played with. She allowed me to do a few, quick and easy styles. I have not made a video on this, but I will share the pictures with a brief description.

Personally, I think elastics work great on little girls. Hair is often slippery and elastics help hold in hair so well and give it a pretty and polished look.

The first style is adorable little pigtails in front. On older girls this looks dated, but when your little girl has short cute hair this style is perfect. Add some adorable little bows and there is a great style for an active child. Girlie Glue contacted me several months ago and asked if they could send me some Girlie Glue and try it on little girls and post a picture promoting it. I have done this several times on Instagram several times. Girlie Glue is fantastic, I wish I had it when A was a toddler! It holds in bows, felt flowers, etc, so well. It doesn't bother the head so the girls leave the adorable accessory in. I dab a bit on the hair or the elastic and stick whatever accessory I want. I think my favorite part of Girlie Glue is that it is made with natural ingredients so it is perfectly safe for your little one to eat if she gets in on her finger and comes off so quick and easy with a little bit of water.

This second style was so cute! All I did was add an elastic in back of each pigtail and it made a cute additional style for the little one,.

Hope you enjoyed these great styles! Do not forget to go like and subscribe to our YouTube Channel! Thanks for visiting, make sure to subscribe and keep up-to-date with all weekly posts.

Easy Styles for Toddlers

A friend of mine requested tutorials for toddler hairstyles. My daughter is 8 years old, but I still have had the chance to play with hair of younger children. My friend's daughter has little hair around her head, but she has longer strands near the top of her head that go down to her ear. Her daughter reminds me of my daughter as a baby, who was born with long red hair; however, her long hair was only on the top of her head. The rest was peach fuzz. My daughter’s hair was long and crazy and took me years to tame. I know a lot of the issues my dear friend has with her daughter's hair. I did not always do cute styles on my daughter when she was a toddler. At the time, I would go off memory of styles my Mom would do on my sister and me. For the first two years, I would do lots of ponytails. I decided that ponytails were boring and found the world of hairstyle bloggers, which changed our lives! I am going to share some pictures of simple toddler hairstyles that my daughter once wore. I will be doing a series of toddler style videos soon, but for now, I thought this would work.

The first picture is A's daily hair without any brushing and ponytails. a
Second Picture is a small clip, this just keeps hair out of the eyes and really easy to do on any age
The bottom pictures are simple ponytails. For toddlers it is best to use small elastics and cut out with baby nail clippers by pulling the elastic away from the head and cutting.
It is easy to do a simple ponytail on the side or the middle of the head or you can make pigtails.

When A was a baby I did small ponytails and pig tails often. The style is really easy and keeps hair out of the eyes. I always put in bows to add that special touch.

Top left- 2 twists then clipped off on the side of the head
Top Center- Again, 2 easy pigtails
Top Left- 4 topsy tails. This style takes 3 minutes to do and I think any family with a girl should have a topsy tail, in my opinion. Make a loose ponytail and poke a hole in the center and pull the hair up and into the hole and gently tug to tighten, continue this all the way down, until you are ready to stop. I will be doing a video on how to do the topsy tail and a few styles using it.
Bottom Left- Pull Through Braids are one of the best toddler styles. You use elastics and it keeps any hair tied back nice and its a cheat braid. Make a ponytail and split the ponytail in half horizontally. The bottom part of the hair put an elastic around it about 1 inch down the first elastic. Split the hair and pull the top section of the hair through. Continue the steps until you are ready to stop and tie off with an elastic.
Middle Right -  Split a small section of hair above the right ear and tie off with an elastic. Take another section above that elastic combine the hair from the first elastic into the second do that all the way across the head to the left ear.
Bottom Left- Elastic styles are the best for toddlers, split the hair in front into 4 sections and tie off with elastics

Top Left- Make a small ponytail in the center and split in half twist each side and put into pigtails
Top Center- Make a ponytail in the center and tie a braid down the ponytail and tie off.
Top Right- Every little girl loves a simple ponytail. It is the perfect style for an active girl
Center Left- Make pigtails and braid down the end
Center Middle- Another simple side ponytail. A big pretty bow can make a whole new look
Center Right- Make a loose ponytail in the center make a hole in the ponytail and pull the hair up and through the ponytail and tighten. This works best with a topsy tail tool.
Bottom Left- This is a great style for someone that knows how to french braid. Start a french braid on one side of the head and braid around the top of the head and tie off near the ear.
Bottom Center- A toddler bubble braid. Part hair down the head in the center, Tie off a small section on the top. Tie off another small section bellow the elastic and combine hair from the first ponytail and combine in the second, do this all the way down the head.
Bottom Right- Split the hair down the center, and put in 4 loose ponytails, make a center hole in each ponytail, flip the hair around and inside the hole. Do the same flip in all 4 ponytails.

Heart Topped Bun

I just posted our first video on YouTube. The style is a bit advanced, but I hope it will be recreated. It is the Heart Topped Bun. The video can be viewed on YouTube https://youtu.be/i86fR8Z1X0c.

I have done done a pictorial tutorial on this style but I thought I would type it out and you can follow it on the video also. Please keep in mind that this is my very first tutorial and it is rocky, I have learned a lot and now what to change. Each video will be improved as I go.

Step 1: Split hair along the bottom of the head just below the ear, the part will need to go from one side of the head to the other

Step 2: Split the bottom part in two, then make 2 braids, tie off the ends

Step 3: The remaining hair on the top part of the head needs to be tied off with a large elastic. Try and make the ponytail halfway up the head.

Step 4: Use your bun maker and put the hair through the center of the bun maker. Spread the hair around the bun maker.

Step 5: Put an elastic around the hair and bun maker to keep the bun secure, bring up the bottom two braids and secure in the elastic.

Step 6: Take out a small section of hair at he top of the bun, split the hair in half and make 2 braids. These braids will form the heart.

Step 7: Twist or braid the hair that is around the bun, bobby pin the twist or braid into place.

Step 8: Shape the heart bringing one braid to the left of the bun and another braid to the right of the bun, tie off the ends and secure the heart in place. The tail of the heart can be tucked into the twist or braid that is around the bun.

Step 9: Take ribbon and string the ribbon up the 2 braids at the base of the head, just like tying a shoe.

Viola the style is complete. Please watch the video for directions, and pictures will be coming soon.

If you decide to recreate, and you have an Instagram account please use the hashtag #lrbhearttoppedbun so I can see the recreation, and you can always use my personal account hashtag of #littleredbraids. Thanks, and come again!

Our Hair Care Routine

I have really struggled with the proper care of hair, both mine and my daughter's. My hair is particularly difficult because it is thick, wavy, and frizzy. It has taken a lot of reading and asking questions to figure out the proper care of hair, so I thought I would share what I know. Proper care of your hair is vital to how healthy your hair is. Did you know that your hair produces natural oils that are critical to how healthy you hair looks? Several years ago, I hated the look and feel of oily hair, and I thought that meant it needed to be washed. I have since learned that oily hair is good, and that there are products to help keep your natural oils intact while making your hair feel less oily, including dry shampoo. Dry shampoo comes in many brands. Some people swear by the pricey salon brands while other people do not care and go with brands bought in the store. For myself, I use your everyday dry shampoo bought at Walmart. I wash my hair once to twice a week and use my dry shampoo to take away the oily look and feel. Dry shampoo also gives life and body to my otherwise very crazy hair. Because my hair is thick, frizzy and wavy, I use my straightener once a week to keep my hair pretty straight until I wash it again. If you use heat on your hair, make sure to use a heat protectant to avoid frying the ends. Also, do not hurry to straighten or curl your hair while it is wet. I swear by argon oil and keratin. Both help keep my hair healthy and give it the extra oils needed to bring down the frizz. How I treat my girl's hair is different because her hair is not the same. Because it's not so oily, she only washes it every 3 days. She's a kid and often doing gymnastics outside, so her hair gets dirty quickly. When she is in the shower, while the conditioner is on her head, she will comb her hair with a wide-toothed comb. I only use heat on her hair a few times a month, typically every other Sunday to avoid excessive damage. My daughter also likes to feel pretty. She likes me to style her hair daily and requests overnight braids for curly hair. I avoid overuse of elastic bands in her hair and cut the bands to avoid breaking her ends when I do use them. I also keep up on her haircuts. For her, I use keratin and argon oil, which helps with her hair's health. I do not use a lot of product on her hair. Instead, I simply spray it with water before braiding it. When I do a complicated style, I use a spray gel. I love spray gel! Because it's a spray, goop does not get all over my hands. It does take time to dry, so I have plenty of time to do what I want before it starts working. It is not a sticky product, but it does give grip to her hair. The final product I use is hairspray. I typically spray it when her hair is ready to be washed, or I have a style that needs it. Our hair care is pretty basic, and we do not use a lot of product. Just remember a few things: never wash your hair daily to preserve oils and use dry shampoo when it gets really oily. When you use heat, use a heat protectant. Argon oil and Keratin are good for hair health, while water is the greatest help to make styles hold. I hope this helps, and you learn something new!

Saturday, Braid Day

I have been encouraged by many to do something further with my braiding and make a living out of my hobby.
My two aunts have volunteered their heads and their girls heads to be my braiding models. On Saturday I went to visit them where I taught my two aunts to do basic braids. Once they learned basic braids – bubble, fishtail, rope and pull through - each girl lined up to get a pretty style for church the next morning. It was a special treat for each girl since they typically get their hair combed and little else before they are sent off to school.
I appreciate each mom and daughter allowing me to practice braiding on thinner hair. I also thank them for their willingness to pose for a picture and allow me to use it in my portfolio.
